Convent in Detail

ALPHONSA F. C. CONVENT, SOUTHRIDGE PARK MTHATHA, EASTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA

Alphonsa Jyothi Province Bharananganam started its first Convent in South African mission in 1995. By the Divine providence, our Superior General Rev. Mother Henry Suso and our Provincial Superior of that time Rev. Sr. Therese Keechery took a step forward to start a new Mission in South Africa. During that time the Bishop of Mthatha Diocese, Rt. Rev. A. Z. Brook and the Parish Priest of the Cathedral Rev. Fr. Urs. Fischer visited India looking for priests and nuns to ... work in the Diocese. As a result, Rev. Sr. Recy Treasa and Rev. Sr. Rose Joice arrived here on 22^nd January 1995 and stayed with Holy Cross and Ursuline sisters till they get a new convent on 1^st July 1995. They were helping in the Parish activities and teaching Catechism in the Parish and Outstations and also in Khanyisa School.

Together with the Apostolate of Education and Parish work, we had a desire to start something outside the field to uplift the South African community. It was a great milestone, after long discussions and prayers, with the great help of Mr. Sebastian Vattakkunnel the Principal of Khanyisa High School we have started Khanyisa Children’s Home for the abandoned, HIV/AIDS infected and affected Children from 0-6 years.  At the moment there are 3 sisters working in Children’s home, taking care of 28 children and also helping the parish Pre-School and Day Care Centres and Outstations. Other 2 Sisters are working in Khanyisa High School and helping in the Parish Activities. Alphonsa F. C. Convent SouthRidge Park Mthatha is the Centre of South African Mission and once in every year we all from different communities will come together and spend time in prayer and other activities.
